Professional Social Media (Yes, it's necessary)

 Professional Social Media

The fun side of social media is just that: fun! However, social platforms are becoming a hub for new and upcoming careers in various different industries. Because of this slight culture change, it is important to be well adversed in the area of professional social media (especially if you're thinking of branding yourself this way!)

There are multiple professional social media sites. The most common and easily accessed one is LinkedIn. I am sure most of us have at least heard of this site. It is a place where professionals and amateurs alike can create an online profile in order to market themselves or a company. Profiles are easily searched and accessed from anyone on the site; this increases the chances of exposure and prospective connections. LinkedIn has experienced much success because users are able to brand themselves from the comfort of their own screen. Who wouldn't want to search for jobs on a professional site while simultaneously being in their pajamas? This is the product of what professional sites such as LinkedIn provide.

To promote my personal brand of environmental awareness and textile re-use, I have my own LinkedIn profile that highlights these attributes. When creating this profile, I had to keep in mind that no one actually knew me. This allowed me to be as detailed as possible, and promote myself to an imaginary user that has never met me in person. Not only that, but I kept the displayed information limited to the important things. This allows others to remember necessary information rather than having to sort through fluffy imagery in order to receive essential information. If any of you are interested in creating your own professional profile, these are good tips to keep in mind (and feel free to visit my own personal profile for inspiration).

A great profile to follow or research on LinkedIn is Thrift+, a thrifting company based out of London. This company embodies what thrifting and resale is all about. Not only that, but this company has a large reach and provides their followers with informational posts that provide more details about their company and operations. An individual that would be worth looking into on LinkedIn is Jennifer Cline. She is a self-starter that operates on multiple different social media sites. Her profile on this professional social media site is well put together, and provides links to videos that relate to her business.

Professional social media does not have to be boring! Although it is not as casual as personal profiles, it can open an avenue for personal expression and online branding. Challenge yourself to make your own professional profile, and personalize it to you! This can be fun and rewarding. As always, thanks tuning in. What will we talk about next week?
